This evening, I did my warm-up (500m row, 2 rounds of 10 each - push-ups; sit-ups and squats). Then I worked on my double-unders, which is jumping rope, but having the rope go under twice during 1 jump. I couldn't do them last time I tried and I got very frustrated. Tonight I think I got 3 total but not in a row. I was super excited and already getting a little winded and tired (sad, I know). Then Rusty demonstrated some of the new moves I would need for the workout and he had me practice each of them a few times.
Here is the WOD:
4 rounds for time:
10 ice-cream makers video (My modification was only doing the first part. So, I jumped up and held myself on the rings, elbows bent, arm close to my body, hands below my chin (similar to a chin up) and just held my self there as long as I could, but no longer than 3 seconds)
10/10 single arm KB swings (I used a 20lb KB)
10/10 single arm KB power cleans (20lb KB)
run 1st round - 73m; 2nd - 176m; 3rd - 226m; 4th - 400m
I will admit that I was worried when I saw that most of the other people took upwards of 20 minutes to do this WOD. I thought "Yikes, I'll be here for 45 minutes". Well, that wasn't the case, but not for any good reason. Rusty told me initially that we would modify it as we went, depending on how I felt.
I got through the first very round slowly. The KB power cleans were killing me and I know it's because I was lifting more with my arms than my legs. I tried to work on this, but when you're doing it for speed, it can be hard to think of everything at once. When I got back from the run, I felt like I was going to throw up. He said that I look fatigued and asked how I felt. I said "I'm about this far (thumb and forefinger about 3 inches apart) from throwing up". I rested for quite a while and even after my breathing and heart rate slowed a bit, I still felt nauseous. Then I went back to the rings to do round 2. At that point he told me that if I did the full round, I would just end up back where I was, so I should only do one more round, cut the reps in half and not bother with the run. So, I took the reps down to 5 and when I was done those I still went out and ran 73m just so I could say I finished that half a round.
So, I did 1.5 rounds and it took almost 15 minutes (although a portion of that was spent trying to settle my stomach/calm down). I asked him what my time was and he said that it was around 15 minutes but that he didn't want me to worry about that. I said that I need to know my starting point so that I can know if I've improved. He agreed but said I "don't need to know it yet", because we're still figuring out what my body can handle.
So, it was bittersweet. I got my first double under and then I got a DNF on the WOD. It's not an official DNF because he didn't record it, but it was frustrating because the last thing I want to be is that girl who doesn't finish stuff.
Now I stink to high heaven and I have no appetite, but I did eat a few almonds and a Luna bar so I'm not going to bed with only 1300 cals and an intense (albeit short) workout under my belt. Time for a shower and then off to bed. I'll do it all again Saturday morning.
Oh - BONUS - I never did throw up!
